Part 3

The Dinner Party

“HE’S GOING TO SAY SOMETHING,” said Ethan petulantly. Jake couldn’t see his brother properly from the backseat of Antonio’s car, but he wouldn’t have been surprised if Ethan slumped out of defiance.

Or not. Apart from the lingering stubbornness, Ethan didn’t act much like the teenager Jake remembered.

“He’s not going to say anything,” replied Antonio patiently.

“Of course he is, and I know exactly how he’s going to say it, too,” said Ethan, and put on a surprisingly accurate Spanish accent. “How was your first day of your sabatical, mije? Any news you want to tell us? And then he’s going to look right down at my waistline.”

Jake had complained once about Ethan’s teenage stubbornness to their parents. Ben and Robert had laughed for five minutes. He didn’t understand why; from his vantage, Ethan had been incredibly stubborn – and in the end, had gotten exactly what he wanted.

“It’s only been a day, queride,” said Antonio patiently. “He’s not going to look at your stomach. You’re not even in estrus, you cannot possibly be pregnant.”

“Like that would stop him,” said Ethan darkly.

“Ignore him,” Antonio said, carefully turning the car into the narrow entrance to the parking garage under Héctor’s and Yolanda’s apartment building. “He can’t do anything about it, except talk.”

“I’m not so sure about that,” muttered Ethan.

Antonio sighed. “The rule requiring omegas to take a sabbatical every few years was in place long before the Philharmonic hired you, queride.”

“I’m just saying – they never actually paid attention to it before.”

“They’ve never had an omega performer, either,” Antonio pointed out as he drove the Jag expertly into a parking spot, perfectly even between the cars on either side. “And it’s not like you’d have noticed the secretaries taking a sabbatical.”

“Of course not; they never came back,” grumbled Ethan.

Antonio threw the car into park before turning to him. He rested his hand on the back of Ethan’s neck, and drew him close until their foreheads touched.

“Then you’ll be the first, queride,” he said softly. Jake coughed delicately from the backseat. Antonio grinned. “We should go before we scandalize your brother.”

Ethan’s mouth quirked a little, but he turned to let himself out of the car anyway. “I don’t think Jake is so easily scandalized.”

“Fuck you, Ethan, I am innocent as the driven snow,” said Jake in defense, but Ethan laughed the same way their parents had laughed at the idea of Ethan being stubborn.

Antonio kept one hand on Ethan as they waited for the elevator – either brushing the backs of their hands together, or gently touching the small of Ethan’s back with his fingertips. Jake kept his eyes averted – it wasn’t that he cared, exactly, but… it felt too intimate to witness, particularly since it was his brother.

“Is it so bad, queride, having the time to yourself, without the pressure of performing?” asked Antonio softly as they waited. “I know you appreciate the time to compose.”

Ethan made a face. “Composing isn’t exactly what everyone’s expecting me to do. I
